Larissa’s story: living well with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia

Larissa was diagnosed eight years ago, at the age of 67, with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). She had no symptoms and started down the road of an anxious ‘wait and see’ period. After just a few months her bloods worsened and was told she needed to start chemo, but Larissa decided against it, and for almost 4 years continued without any treatment.

It was then that she was given a choice of going on to an oral treatment but would need to undertake six rounds of chemo before she could start. Larissa decided to go ahead with the chemo and after it was over, she went medication free for 9 months, then it was time to do something more and she now takes an oral therapy every morning.

Larissa has been feeling much better, walking, running and sightseeing with her daughter in Latvia! She is grateful for every sunrise and getting the opportunity to watch her children grow.

The Leukaemia Foundation is there to support people, like Wayne, with blood cancer and help them navigate that journey.

Remember, discussing treatment options for CLL with your haematologist is important to ensure you are on a treatment plan that works best for you. If you’re starting a new treatment plan it’s important to find a way that works for you to build a habit and stay compliant with treatment protocols – a diary, checklist, time of day – all help to keep you on track.
