Phillip Desbrow Blood Cancer Centre (Brisbane)
196 Herston Rd, Herston QLD 4006
Following the completion of the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit in 1987, the Leukaemia Foundation through its fundraising efforts was able to construct the first purpose-built patient accommodation and support centre. Herston Village was opened in 1989 at a cost of $1.4 million. In 2023, it was renamed to the Phillip Desbrow Blood Cancer Centre.
Since 1989 the 13 one bedroom units have helped more than 1,700 people with blood cancer, giving families free accommodation near the Royal Brisbane and Women’s hospital. In late 2017 long-awaited renovations were finished. These renovations were made possible thanks to incredible support from the community and a $998,400 grant from the Australian Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund.
The centre’s facilities include:
- undercover parking for residents
- community rooms with tea/coffee making facilities
- barbeque facilities.
