Going Green in '18!

Publish Date: 22/2/2018

In an Australian first, hair shaved and snipped from the World’s Greatest Shave will help beat blood cancer AND absorb oil spills at sea!

To celebrate the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave 20th anniversary, the much-loved Australian fundraising campaign is going green in ’18 with Sustainable Salons Australia.

For many years those sacrificing their hair to help beat blood cancer have been able to donate ponytails longer than 20cm to create wigs for people who have lost their own hair due to medically-induced hair loss.

This fantastic tradition will continue via Sustainable Salons Australia, and for the first time in the World’s Greatest Shave’s 20 year history, all hair, including shorter hair clippings and dyed hair will be now be transformed into compost and floating hair booms to absorb oil spills at sea.

Dave Simms from the Leukaemia Foundation said: “Things have come a long way since World’s Greatest Shave began 20 years ago! Now, all the extraordinary Aussies who shave their hair are not only helping people affected by blood cancer but also reducing our environmental impact.  It’s a win for Aussies and a win for the environment!

“It’s incredible to think your hair could end up floating on the Great Barrier Reef blocking an oil spill or made into a wig to help those who haven’t lost their hair by choice.” he added.

Sustainable Salons Australia Co-Founder Paul Frasca comments “Hair is such a powerful resource. Not only does it have amazing repurposing opportunities, but it’s unlimited! In a world where our natural resources are in steady decline, why are we dumping this valuable commodity in landfill?

“We’re on a mission to reverse this, and that’s why we’re hugely excited to be partnering with World’s Greatest Shave.” he added.

Ponytails in the post

Ponytails can be dropped off at any participating World’s Greatest Shave public event or simply posted to: World’s Greatest Shave Ponytails, c/o Sustainable Salons Australia, 15 Salisbury St, Botany, NSW, 2019.

Sustainable Salons Australia is a comprehensive resource recovery service that collects up to 95% of waste from hair salons, including hair, metals and chemicals. It is Australia’s number one collector and donor of ponytails for wigs, and all recycling proceeds are donated to charitable organisations.

This March join more than 20,000 extraordinary Aussies and help beat blood cancer (and save the reef) by getting sponsored to shave your hair for the Leukaemia Foundation’s 20th anniversary World’s Greatest Shave. Money raised gives families facing blood cancer all the support they need and funds vital research.
