Family team run together in memory of loving father

Publish Date: 22/8/2017

Lukas along with his brother Mark and niece Maddison will be taking on the Blackmores Half Marathon in memory of their dedicated father John.

John sadly passed away in January 2015, following an acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) diagnosis.  The three siblings, along with Maddison’s boyfriend Justin have pledged to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation, as part of the “Get Your Blood Pumping for Blood Cancer” campaign.  They will run the iconic 21km course on Sunday 17 September, crossing the Harbour Bridge and ending at the Opera House.

Lukas explains how difficult the blood cancer journey was for the whole family.

“Having seen what dad went through, it was heartbreaking and not pleasant at all.  Following his diagnosis he was sick for 9 years; going through remission and relapsing. His illness was a part of our lives for a long time. The Foundation’s help was multi-faceted; to start with they provided extremely useful resources and helped us understand the illness. Everything was new and it was a steep learning curve for all of us. As a whole the organisation does an amazing job at providing those crucial elements,” Lukas said.

John’s treatment plan meant that he had to go to the hospital quite regularly, often in daily blocks at a time. The Foundation’s patient transport program provided a free service which enabled John to attend his appointments without the stress of trying to organise friends and family.

“The transport service was absolutely invaluable. My dad was my mum’s primary caregiver and therefore she wasn’t able to drive, it was difficult for him to get to his treatment. Dad felt bad asking friends and other family so this service gave us another opportunity, without worrying about imposing on others. We all work, and it was difficult to take time off every 3 weeks. The transport service helped the family continue a normal semblance of life and routine during this time,” Lukas recalls.

Lukas is looking forward to taking part in the Blackmores’ Half Marathon and helping others who may be in a similar situation.

“Completing a half marathon is high on my list of resolutions for this year. I’ve signed up and paid to attend half marathons for two years but due to illness and injury, have never made it to the start line! This year is my year and it will be in memory of my dad!” Lukas explains.
