Umbrella of support helps Susie and Bob

Published Date: 14 September 2017

When Susie Lee’s husband, Bob, was diagnosed with leukaemia she had no idea about the comprehensive emotional and practical support available from the Leukaemia Foundation to help people facing blood cancer.

Susie and Bob“Bob was hospitalised for treatment in Brisbane but we lived 170km away. I was concerned about how I was going to be able to stay close to support him,” Susie said.

“A friend suggested I contact the Leukaemia Foundation and an umbrella immediately went up for me.”

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Susie and Bob were given safe and comfortable accommodation in the city, and were also given support with their travelling costs.
Susie was able to concentrate her efforts on caring for her husband.

“Bob sadly died in 2009. The pain was so agonising,” Susie said.

“But within a few weeks the Leukaemia Foundation reached out to me, sending me information and seeing if they could help me on my grief journey.”

“Even though Bob was gone, their umbrella of support remained,” she said.

When Susie celebrated her 60th birthday, she asked her friends to donate to the Leukaemia Foundation in lieu of gifts.

“This was a great way to raise some money and awareness for an amazing organisation,” Susie said.

Susie now plans to leave a portion of her estate in her Will to the Leukaemia Foundation.

“I can assist others who may be in a situation like ours, as well as help develop ways to beat blood cancer.”
